They Meet
On Saturday afternoon, August 12th 2006, Keith Harrison Dworkin and a couple of roommates brunched at Pine Yard Chinese Restaurant in Evanston, IL. His fortune cookie that day made a very lofty promise: “Your dearest wish will come true within the month!”
Meanwhile, ten miles north, in Highland Park, IL, Laura Nicole Scheinbaum was enjoying a scoop of organic peanut butter in celebration of the completion of her summer courses. She thought she had it all figured out.
Both of these individuals were students at Northwestern University. Both of these individuals were active members of the collegiate theatre community. And for over a month, both of these individuals had been performing together in the cast of NU’s summer musical, “The Boys Are Coming Home.” But, until that day, they had never been more than friendly acquaintances.
It is tradition that, before the opening number of a show, cast members exchange hugs and pecks-on-the-cheek for good luck and support. Keith and Laura went down the line as usual. But when they reached one another, something magical happened. Their lips met for an instant, and that was all it took. After the opening number, they began their first real conversation. This conversation continued throughout both shows that day, to the cast party at Pete Miller’s Steakhouse, to the ride home -- where Laura intentionally dropped everyone else off before Keith. The brazen woman pulled onto a tiny sidestreet called East Railroad Avenue, turned off the engine, and kissed him. By August 17th, a mere five days later, they made their relationship official. That is, it was on Facebook.
Three Years Later
On June 3rd, 2009, after two graduations, four moving days, eight wisdom-tooth extractions, and a host of life’s other ups and downs, that Facebook status changed.
After a long, hard Wednesday, Keith and Laura were enjoying their favorite kind of night. That is, they were lounging on the couch in comfy pajamas, watching cable t.v. reruns, and enjoying takeout from Blind Faith Café, Laura’s favorite vegetarian restaurant since childhood. After sharing a scrumptious vegan chocolate cupcake, Keith revealed that he had yet another dessert for her. Another dessert?! To Laura’s complete and utter surprise, this one wasn’t edible-- inside the second dessert box was an engagement ring. Laura dealt with the disappointment of having only one cupcake very well.
